Sonic Generations - Final Impressions and Review!

November 11, 2011

Alright, so I've pretty much beaten the game and I think it's really awesome. While it's not innovative and doesn't really bring anything new to the table for the sonic series, it's like a fan service to celebrate Sonic's 20th anniversary as it should. The whole idea to play as two sonics, modern and classic, was brilliant and in my opinion brought lots of fans together and probably inclined some to try out either the way old sonic played or the way new sonic plays. The story was really good and while not in depth or anything fancy you get lot's of references to past sonic games and there are lots of jokes and little things that dedicated sonic fans will notice in the story that can bring quite a few chuckles. The gameplay was really good though but I will say that I actually enjoyed playing Modern Sonic more than Classic. He has a huger repertoire of moves and his levels are full of variety. Classic Sonic plays more like the genesis games than sonic 4 but the platforming sections can be quite brutal and actually cheap sometimes. His jump is floatier than before and in some sections he doesn't have any invincibility frames. Also, some of the platforms are placed so far that you pretty much have to be perfect in some areas unlike the older games to where they could be challenging but it didn't demand you to be perfect. There is though a way to unlock a skill and get the homing attack for classic sonic and it makes his gameplay actually more enjoyable and ends a lot of frustration actually. Modern Sonic though played really well and the only problems I could find with his gameplay was that sometimes you'd run into walls or have to experience cheap deaths but besides that it plays better than Unleashed and Colors. Modern Sonic's jump is so direct that I liked doing platforming with him over Classic Sonic. It's definitely the best Modern Sonic has ever been and the jump is responsive unlike Sonic Unleashed. The graphics in the game are really pretty but I do think the hedgehog engine is aging. The game runs at a disappointing 30fps and they lowered it from 60fps compared to unleash so it wouldn't slow down like that game but it still does and there are many hiccups. The drawrate can also be quite bad in some areas and you don't get that amazing sense of speed like you'd get in Unleashed with just 30fps. PC version does run at 60fps though and looks gorgeous. There are also extra missions where you can play Sonic's friends and while you don't fully control them like you did in the Genesis or adventure days, you can call on them for help. There are also other challenges for the extra missions and while some of them are really fun, others aren't too amazing and kinda seem a tad stupid. Music was excellent and top notch in this game and definitely had some spectacular remixes. Sega is always good with music but they nailed it with this game and I found myself thinking of past memories from when I played the Sega Genesis and found myself singing along with the game (maybe too much as you might've seen in my walkthrough LOL). There are also some leaderboards and stuff like that with online that extends replay value. Overall the game was really good and I really enjoyed it. There is so much replay value and so much fun to be had in the game. Sonic fans will love the game for sure and newcomers should still enjoy it too. It's definitely one of my favorite sonic games and probably tied as my favorite with Sonic 3 and knuckles mostly because of the sheer effort they put into this game to make it good and they succeeded. Sorry this was so long and that it took a while to respond and don't know if you are interested in my opinion anymore but that's it. Anyway, hope you are enjoying the game and thanks for offering to let me help you with your web article. It's quite an honor I appreciate it.
